Endodontic Specialist Dr. Dijana Elmejdoubi DDS, MS: A Journey of Grit and Grace
In the heart of war-torn Bosnia and Herzegovina, a resilient spirit was forged. Dr. Dijana Elmejdoubi, born amidst adversity, would go on to defy odds and shape an extraordinary path.

Her journey began on the track, where in the year 2000, she stood as an Olympic athlete, a testament to her determination and raw talent. However, this was just the start of an illustrious career.

While working full-time as a Pharmaceutical Quality Control Chemist, she embarked on a master’s program, showcasing unparalleled dedication. Dr. Elmejdoubi’s thirst for knowledge and her commitment to her craft were unwavering.

She stood proudly, holding a Master’s degree in Biomedical Sciences. The foundation of her medical expertise was laid. The year saw her achieve the pinnacle of her academic pursuits – the coveted Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree.

But Dr. Elmejdoubi’s quest for excellence didn’t stop there. She earned her Endodontics Certificate, solidifying her place at the forefront of her field. Board eligible and eagerly awaiting certification, her expertise is sought after.

A New Oral Health Department at the Olympics

Dijana Elmejdoubi’s path has taken her from the Olympics to dental school and a career as an endodontist. But when she ran the 400-meter dash for Bosnia-Herzegovina in the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia, there was so much she didn’t know about caring for her mouth.

It’s a need the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is working to address. This year, the Paris Olympics will feature a first-ever Oral Health Department. The Olympics has had a dental clinic of some kind for a century, but the new department will provide screenings, emergency care and preventative treatment tailored especially to athletes and their performance needs, the IOC said in an online announcement.

It’s yet another reflection of the growing understanding that “the mouth is the window to the rest of the body,” said Eric Mediavilla, DDS ’00, FAGD, associate professor and associate dean of admission, student and alumni affairs at CU SDM.

Going For Gold: A History of Dentists in the Olympics

Dr. Dijana Elmejdoubi is a remarkable woman who has excelled in both athletics and dentistry. Hailing from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Elmejdoubi discovered her passion for running at a young age. Her exceptional talent led her to represent her country at the 2000 Sydney Olympics in the 400-meter dash. While the Olympic experience was undoubtedly a highlight of her life, Elmejdoubi’s journey was far from over.

After her Olympic career, Elmejdoubi pursued her academic interests and earned a degree in biology. Her passion for helping others led her to the field of dentistry, and she eventually obtained a dental degree. The transition from the high-intensity world of professional athletics to the meticulous demands of dentistry was a significant challenge, but Elmejdoubi’s determination and perseverance allowed her to thrive in both arenas. Today, Dr. Elmejdoubi is a successful dentist who continues to inspire others with her story.

Dr. Dijana Elmejdoubi’s journey to dentistry was not traditional, but she hopes it is inspirational. “Because I’m so passionate about dentistry, I  hope maybe somebody will hear my story and get inspired. Somebody will say, ‘if she did it why not me.’”

Growing up in Bosnia during the civil war, Dr. Elmejdoubi credits running track as her lifeline during that tough time. “At 18 years old, I had the honor of representing Bosnia and Herzegovina in the 400-meter dash at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Growing up during the war in Bosnia, I faced unimaginable challenges — confined to basements, cut off from education, and forced to train in secret. Running became my way out, a path to a better future. Standing at the Olympic Stadium, surrounded by the roar of the crowd, I realized that all the hard work, dedication, and sacrifice had led to this moment.

Dijana Elmejdoubi was 9 years old when she discovered the thrill of running. A professional coach visited her school in Tuzla, Bosnia, and her life changed forever when Dijana emerged as the fastest sprinter among all students at her school – boys and girls, in first through eighth grade.

“I fell in love with running from day one,” Elmejdoubi, now a Colorado State University graduate student, recalled. “I’ve also always loved science and thought I would become a doctor. But in Bosnia, school is strict and difficult, and sports are kept separate. It’s very hard to do well in both.”

“Competing in the Olympics is every athlete’s dream,” Elmejdoubi said. “Being there with top athletes from around the world was a big win for me.” It also led to her becoming a Division I athlete in the United States.
